Job Title: Researcher
Primary duties: Information gathering, research and analysis
Responsible to: Tibet Watch Coordinator and Analyst
Purpose:
To research, monitor and document human rights violations and other events inside Tibet by gathering and analysing information from a variety of sources.
To gather information on the situation inside Tibet including in response to urgent situations; communicate in English the information gathered, both accurately and quickly.
To brief the Tibet Watch Coordinator and Analyst on news and any developments inside Tibet.
· Interview new arrivals from Tibet, ensure the timely translation of interviews into English.
- Monitor Tibetan news and social media websites, both within Tibet and in exile. Summarise and analyse content for the TW Coordinator, as requested, and if necessary provide full translation .
- Monitor Chinese language news and social media websites and government websites. Summarise and analyse content for the TW Coordinator, as requested, and if necessary provide full translation .
- Write short reports and analysis of current trends inside Tibet.
- Develop and maintain a network of confidential contacts to optimize information gathering and verification.
- Build and maintain contacts with key targets in the exiled community in India, including the CTA.
- Regularly input all information gathered into a secure database
- Perform other tasks and responsibilities as may be required in order to ensure the smooth running of the office.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential skills
- Proven experience of under taking research.
- Excellent English and Tibetan language skills, both verbal and written.
- First hand experience of living in Tibet.
- In depth knowledge of relevant issues in Tibet, such as the human rights situation, political, social, legal, economic and cultural context.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to deal in sensitive and understanding manner with a variety of people, including survivors of human rights violations.
- Integrity and trust, ability to deal with highly confidential information.
- Excellent computer skills and internet based research skills.
- A team player. The successful candidate has to be able to work as part of a small and close team.
- Good administrative skills and well organized.
- Flexibility and dedication. Required to work evenings and weekends when urgent news from Tibet.
Desirable skills:
· Experience in interviewing
· Experiencing in sourcing, analyzing and verifying information, including assessing the quality of the information.
· Background in journalism, NGO, political or social work.
· Excellent Chinese language, both verbal and written.
- University degree
- Knowledge of Wiley transliteration
The position carries a competitive salary and will be offered initially on a 6 month probationary period. The position will be based in Mcleod Ganj.
The position is full-time, 35 hours per week.
